Wasp Nest Removal Whalley Range

Whalley Range was laid out for building in the 1830s by the banker Samuel Brooks, and the estate he planned is still legible on the map. Long straight avenues, wide plots, and three-storey villas set well back behind hedges and stone gate piers. Most of the area is a conservation area now, which is why the lime and beech canopy along College Road and Clarendon Road has survived where it has gone almost everywhere else in the city. It is a handsome place to live and an unusually good place to be a wasp.

The trouble is the roofline. Those villas were built with generous overhanging eaves, deep boxed soffits, and roof voids far larger than anything on a modern semi. When the houses were carved up into flats, and a large share of M16’s stock was, the conversions sorted out the rooms and left the roof alone. Nobody ever sealed the eaves. A queen that slips in behind a fascia board in April has an enormous dry space to build in, and by August it is a mature colony that nobody has laid eyes on once.

Where we find nests in Whalley Range

• Overhanging eaves on the three-storey villas. On the streets off College Road, Carlton Road and Clarendon Road, the gap where the soffit meets the wall head is the single most treated entry point in the postcode.
• Shared roof voids above converted flats. One nest over a subdivided house puts wasps past three or four front doors at once, which is why these calls come in urgent and often from more than one resident on the same afternoon.
• Dormers and third-floor bedrooms. Later loft conversions frequently left a void behind the dormer cheek. Wasps use it, and the flight path ends up crossing the window somebody sleeps beside.
• Coach houses, boundary walls and outbuildings. A number of the original mews buildings survive behind Upper Chorlton Road and Withington Road, and their low roofs and loose coping bricks are dependable nest sites.
• Hedge banks and rough ground. The scrubby edges around Alexandra Park and Manley Park produce ground nests from July onwards, usually discovered the hard way by someone with a strimmer.

If you are in the ground-floor flat and the loft hatch belongs to somebody upstairs, that is not an obstacle. We work from outside wherever we can, so we only need to reach the point the wasps themselves are using.

Sixty pounds, fixed, for any wasp nest in M16. Should the occupants turn out to be hornets, nothing changes, because a hornet is a wasp of a larger species and the £60 stands. The fee includes the assessment, professional insecticide, and a free return visit if activity carries on past 48 hours. There is no surcharge for height, evenings or weekends, and we are happy to invoice a landlord or managing agent at the same price. Bumblebee nests are £70, though if one is somewhere harmless we will usually tell you to let it be.
