Wasp Nest Removal Northenden

Northenden sits on the south bank of the Mersey, and the oldest part of it is a genuinely good patch for wasps. The conservation area designated in 1981 covers a little over seven hectares around the parish church and runs down to the river bank, and inside it mid-Victorian brick terraces and 19th-century shop frontages stand alongside later interwar semis. • Parapets and signage boxes on the village frontages. The older shop buildings along Palatine Road, including the run near the old cinema, have box gutters, parapet voids and boxed-in signage. Dark, dry and undisturbed from May onwards.
• Boxed-in eaves on the interwar semis. The 1930s stock towards Royle Green Road and Longley Lane was built with deep boxed eaves, timber barge boards and airbricks. Perished pointing at the gable end is the usual way in.
• Garden banks and the river corridor. The rough ground and mature trees behind the village gardens, towards Boat Lane, Ford Lane and Kenworthy Woods, hold ground nests in old rodent burrows and exposed tree-wasp nests in thick hedging.
• Sheds, garages and flat-roofed outbuildings in Sharston. Detached garages and felt roofs on the Sharston side are a standard late-summer call, and the nest is usually found by somebody opening a door that has been shut for a fortnight.

Most people who ring have not actually seen the nest, only the traffic. That is enough to work from. A steady two-way stream at one point on the building, whether a soffit gap, an airbrick or a hole in the mortar, tells us where to start, and we trace it from the ground on arrival.

Not everything going into a Northenden wall is a wasp. Bumblebees take to old bird boxes, compost heaps and cavity vents around here, and they are usually best left alone, because a bumblebee colony is small, slow-tempered and dies back naturally by the end of the season. Honeybees are different again — a local beekeeper may collect a honeybee swarm, and we will say so if that is what you are looking at.
