Fallowfield is dense, terraced, and heavily rented — and that combination shapes the wasp work we do here. The long Victorian terrace rows off Wilmslow Road and around Ladybarn were built with continuous roof voids, brick party walls that rarely reach the roof felt, and original timber fascias. When a queen starts a nest above one house in spring, by August the colony’s flight path can be bothering three or four front doors at once.

The Fallowfield pattern

• Terrace roof voids are the number-one site in M14. Entry is usually a slipped slate or a gap where the fascia meets the gutter line.
• HMO loft spaces — many Fallowfield lofts are boarded, insulated, and rarely opened, so nests get discovered late and large. If tenants report a ticking or scratching sound from the ceiling in July, take it seriously.
• Air bricks and cellar vents on the older terraces toward Rusholme, which lead to cavity-wall colonies.
• Overgrown back yards and ginnels, where ground nests appear in late summer, especially near Platt Fields Park and the Fallowfield Loop.
